Building
Revitalization Featured
Project:
1920
L Street, NW, Washington, DC gallery

Client: Leggat
McCall Properties LLP
Location: 1920
L Street, NW, Washington, DC
Originally
built in 1967, 1920 L Street epitomized the typical Washington, DC "box"
office in the Modernist aesthetic. Its minimalist exterior, now a faded
black aluminum and glass curtainwall, was echoed in its understated entry
and main entry lobby. The client's objective was to transform the image
of the building from dark and obsolete to bright and upscale in order
to reposition the property for complete releasing.
Major design
elements in the revitalization include:
-
A new steel
and glass canopy marks the main entry amid a uniform silver aluminum
and glass facade. Two flagpoles off of two granite fins project at
70-degree angles to enhance and dignify the entrance.
-
The granite
wing walls continue inside and the warmth of the lobby finishes visually
engages and draws one through the glass vestibule and into the lobby
itself.
-
A new guard
desk provides information and security.
-
A gentle
curving drywall ceiling hovers over the lobby, backlit by the glow
of unseen cove lights.
-
The image
transformation of the lobby was achieved through the strategic use
of quality materials such as marble, granite, stainless steel, glass
and anigre wood panels.
